Let’s Talk Culture- Caring Roles within Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Communities

Ishar presents "Let’s Talk Culture," an enriching event designed to enhance cultural competency in the mental health and well-being space. As service providers, recognizing and addressing the diverse needs of those we serve is crucial. This seminar series provides valuable insights into working with one of the most vulnerable groups in our community: CaLD women. By understanding their unique challenges, we can better support their mental health and overall well-being.

The third seminar of this year, "Exploring Caring Roles within Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) Communities " will examine the diverse caregiving roles within CaLD communities, emphasising the importance of recognising and understanding varied cultural practices. It will address the unique challenges faced by these caregivers, such as language barriers, social isolation, financial constraints, and cultural stigmas, while also exploring the gendered aspects of caregiving and their impact on family dynamics. Additionally, the seminar will analyze the accessibility of support services for CaLD caregivers and discuss strategies to overcome barriers, aiming to enhance support and resources for this diverse group.

Lived Experience speaker 1: Selina Peng

Selina is passionate about exploring the “spaces in between” and tending the earth there. Her work broadly focuses on improving marginalised people’s access to acceptance and belonging using anti-oppressive practice within an ecological framework, with a special interest in neurodivergence through her social enterprise Neurocraft. As a social worker and former engineer she embraces bottom-up multidisciplinary multimodal approaches to individual empowerment and social justice. She is drawn to the power of personal storytelling to cut through the noise, speak to the soul, and build unlikely bridges. Her own story is dominated by themes of intergenerational trauma, otherness, self-acceptance, and redemption. At age 7 she immigrated to Perth from China during the difficult economic conditions of the early 1990’s, and today she is a proud parent and carer to her two Autistic children. She was herself diagnosed with Autism and ADHD in her late 30’s.
